For the list of professional American football teams based within New York City, see List of professional American football teams in New York City

Since 1920 (the founding of the National Football League), there have been 39 professional American football teams on the major league (since 1920) or highest minor league level (before 1950) that played their home games in (or were based in) greater New York City, by far the greatest number of any metropolitan area in the United States.

Below is a list of the professional American football teams that either played their home games in, or were headquartered in, outside the New York city limits (those who played in New York City are listed at List of professional American football in New York City). To be included for this list, the team must have played a regular season game in the National Football League, any league named American Football League, and any league commonly believed (by the sportwriters of the time) to be on a level, or in competition, with these leagues, and the Arena Football League.
