Jaytee (c. 1989-?) was a male mongrel terrier dog, from Ramsbottom, Bury, Greater Manchester, England who was subject to parapsychological studies in the 1990s, which focused on whether or not it could be shown that Jaytee was able to receive psychic indications that his owner was returning home, which he would allegedly indicate by going to the door.

Background

[edit]

Jaytee was adopted as a puppy from Manchester Dogs Home in 1989 by Pamela Smart. Pamla Smart lived in a ground floor flat next door to her parent, William and Muriel Smart. In 1993, she unfortunately lost her job.

  • Background about independent researcher Rupert Sheldrake. Morphic resonance, books, etc. Sheldrake publishes surveys that show that many owners think dogs are psychic.
  • State the obvious that psi is a concept not commonly recognised scientifically as valid.

with alleged ability to psychically communicate with his human owner. Jaytee was subject to tests by independent researcher Rupert Sheldrake who claimed to have demonstrated this ability, and proposed that this was a consequence of his own ideas on "morphic resonance", and Professor Richard Wiseman who remained sceptical.

Timeline

[edit]

Sheldrake publishes Seven Experiments that Could Change the World in 1994.

November 1994 - Austrian TV Company first carried out experiments. Jaytee was 5 years old.

Press coverage from January 1995[1]

12-13 June 1995 - Wiseman et al's 1st and 2nd experiments.

December 1995 - Wiseman et al's 3rd and 4th experiments.

Uncritical press coverage in September 1996[2][3] - The Sunday Times however presents a more balanced piece, including quotes from Lewis Wolpert and Barry Keverne who are more sceptical[4]

Wiseman's paper published in the peer-reviewed journal British Journal of Psychology[5]

Wiseman's results were reported by news sources the BBC[6], The Independent[7], and to be fair given their earlier uncritical pieces The Times[8] and Daily Mail[9].

November 1998 the Times reports again[10]

Sheldrake publishes Dogs that Know When their Owners Are Coming Home in 1999.

Sheldrake publishes paper in the Journal of Scientific Exploration, a journal with a reputation for publishing fringe nonsense, in 2000 [11], criticises work of Wiseman et al.. Called for further research. Doesn't mention morphic resonance.

Wiseman et al. replied to Sheldrake in the Journal of the Society for Psychical Research[12]
