Noli Del Mundo Vicedo (26 September 1960 - present) is a local Filipino artist who graduated from the University of Santo Tomas Fine Arts Department, majoring in Adverstising Arts. Currently, he is also teaching multiple subjects in the same department.

Early Life[edit]

As a child, Noli has always enjoyed the arts. The pursuit of art in his life would continue in his college days where he would rightfully take up an art related course.

Growing up in a less fortunate family, he had very important choices to make as a college student. Noli was going to take up a major in Painting originally, but due to his background decided that he would have a better future ahead of him if he chose to pursue a degree in Advertising. It gave him more confidence about his future and that spurred him to major in his second choice.

Relationships and Influences[edit]

Regarding his influences, Noli has greatly appreciated the local scene with his development as an artist. With the likes of Botong Francisco, Vicente Manansala, and Ang Kiukok, the talent pool of Filipino artists was all but lacking. He has gotten inspiration from all of these artists and a lot of the influence can be seen in his works, although he still uses his own style accompanied by his mastery over painting.

Outside of the Philippines, he has also gained a lot of knowledge and technique from the world’s finest, such as Rufino Tamayo, Diego Rivera (Frida Kahlo’s husband), Paul Klee, and Constantin Brancusi to mention a few. These international talents are pillars of his inspiration as well in the field of fine arts.

Painting[edit]

The development of Noli’s style may not be seen completely through his paintings, but the artist has mentioned his personal experience with the evolution of his trademark dovetail-cubism.

His style went from Classicism to Romanticism, of which the latter he believes he is most affiliated with. From there he touched on Impressionism and the Modern methods. During his graduate school days, he started being fond of Cubism with a bit of Neo-classicism. That would eventually become his trademark as his style would find ways to simplify subjects into shapes and forms representing body parts and his utilization of vivid and festive colors would define who he was and what he wanted to stick to style-wise as an artist.

His first one-man gallery was in 2007, where he featured one of his most famous works, “Father and Son.”[1] This particular exhibit has a wonderful backstory behind it and one that would resonate in Noli’s mind for the rest of his life.

In the same year when he opened this exhibit, his daughter was severely ill and they required a lot of resources to take care of the expenses. And when the exhibit came to a close, the money he received from his artworks was ultimately used for the expenses and the hospital treatment. All of this is coincidental considering the fact that the gallery was about the relationship of a father and his child, the gender being the only difference.

Teaching[edit]

An Advertising Arts professor at the College of Fine Arts and Design in the University of Santo Tomas, Noli has taught a handful of generations and continues to lend his expertise in the field, often calling what he does an an advocacy more than just a job. He sees this position as an opportunity to give back by teaching students and investing time giving tips instead of just lessons as he remembers the people who have invested their lives during his time as a student of the arts.[2]
