Social Networking and Collaboration in Organizations
[edit]The Takeover of Social Networking and Technology in the Workplace
The internet is an evolution of communication that stems from the telephone, library, and mail (Keyes, 2013). A survey by NielsenWire found that 69% of Americans video chat via pc and 33% video chat via smartphone (Nielson, 2010). As the internet is a type of technology, technology has made simplified processes, as a result, organizations are able to cut costs, which includes skilled human labor. Skilled human is replaced with unskilled labor. This phenomenon is called McDonaldization. “Unskilled labor + technology = McDonalidization. A variation of McDonalization has been creeping its way into industry since the formula was created” (Keyes, 2013, p.6) McDonalidization explains how technology and low cost labor allow for prices to be cut as McDonald’s practiced many years ago. The internet is technology that eliminates skilled human labor. An example of this is the proliferation of e-commerce and the simplification of sales channels and the futility of retailers. The internet allows an employee to be connected to their work 24/7. Social networking has grown exponentially since the start of the millennium and is only becoming more sophisticated.

The authors explicate how the business world acknowledges that collaboration is necessary for businesses to thrive. The structure of an organization is difficult to implement collaboration from the top-down structure. Collaboration isn’t mandatory in organizations according to the authors and having employees collaborate voluntarily is difficult. The article explains how wiki usage is becoming much more prevalent in organizations. The findings showed that wikis are great for collaboration, and the bottom-up structure elicits more collaboration but the higher ups feel it can disrupt the structure of the organization. The authors suggest that the hierarchy of the organization determines how effective collaboration is.
