Marko E. Weigert in May 2011

Marko E. Weigert (German: [ˈmaʁko ˈvaɪ̯ɡɛʁt], born 1969 in Markranstädt in the Leipzig district[1][2]) is a German ballet director,[3] choreographer,[4] ballet master, dancer and stage light designer.[5] Alongside choreographer Dan Pelleg he is artistic co-director of the wee dance company of the Gerhart-Hauptmann-Theater Görlitz-Zittau [de] (the theatre’s dance ensemble[6] which currently resides in Görlitz, Germany) as well as having recorded for radio plays as a voice actor[7] and a musician.[8]

Biography[edit]

Marko E. Weigert was trained as a dancer, choreographer and dance teacher at the Palucca Schule Dresden and the Hochschule für Musik und Theater "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" Leipzig[4]. He gained acting experience in the ATL Leipzig theatre ensemble from 1985 to 1991 under the direction of acting professor Bernd Guhr (Theaterhochschule "Hans Otto", Leipzig).[9][5]

Since 1999 he has been artistic co-director of wee dance company (which he co-founded with Sommer Ulrickson [de] and Dan Pelleg), a group described as one of the most innovative modern dance companies in Europe.[10] In the year 2000 the company was appointed "Artist in Residence" at Podwil Berlin.[5] By 2011, seven full-length dance pieces and several short pieces were created in Berlin. Guest performances took the company to theatres in 26 cities in Germany and, with the support of various Goethe Institutes and German consulates, to 14 countries.[4][5]

Previously Weigert had worked as a dancer with numerous choreographers in Germany and elsewhere and as choreography assistant to Joseph Tmim at the toladá dance company[4] in Berlin and Szeged[5], Hungary. In 2000 his first own piece "Y" was shown at Podewil Berlin. In 1999 he worked as choreographer for the opera production "Dido and Aeneas" at the Lausitz Opera Summer[5], in 2008 he choreographed for the theatre production "Bartleby" by Babylon works at Kunsthaus Tacheles, Berlin[11] and in the same year together with Dan Pelleg for the ballet of Saarländisches Staatstheater Saarbrücken[12][13], for Tanztheater Görlitz and before his permanent engagement at the GHT for the world premiere of the opera "Linkerhand" by Moritz Eggert and the operas "Orpheus und Eurydike" and "La Traviata", both directed by Sebastian Ritschel at the Görlitz Theatre. Also under the direction of Sebastian Ritschel, he choreographed the musical "Cabaret" at the Magdeburg Opera House in 2016.[14][15]
