Criticism[edit]

Lean In has drawn extensive criticism in its treatment of gender and women.^[1] Amanda Hess at Slate Magazine sees a formal rupture in Lean In's function as "not a memoir, a self-help book, or a career-management how-to, she writes in the book’s introduction. It’s not a feminist manifesto, but it is 'sort of a feminist manifesto'"; for Hess, Sandberg's book suffers from its inability to provide a coherent feminist critique or engage in constructive discussion on gender discrimination in the workplace.^[2] Katha Pollitt at The Nation describes a more informal "storm of outrage" surrounding the book, claiming that Sandberg seems like "someone who’s just taken Women’s Studies 101 and wants to share it with her friends." Pollitt notes that even if taken seriously, Sandberg's work is limited in scope: its advice applies almost exclusively to white-collar professionals or executives.^[3]
