Early life and education[edit]

Scott Trevelyan Logan was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina, the second child of three born to Mary Ann Louisa (née Patten), a homemaker, and Franklin Adams Logan, a lawyer. His father is of English ancestry and his mother of English and German descent. Members of both branches of his family have resided in North Carolina since before the Civil War. His great-grandfather, Daniel M. Logan (1843-1895), founded Logan and Sons, a bathroom fixtures company, in 1870, which is now known as Logan Hardware and Home.

Logan attended Northwood Temple Academy in Fayetteville, where he graduated as salutatorian of his class. Although his father died of an aneurysm when he was in the tenth grade, Logan has stated in interviews that his school years were "excellent... It was a good time for me and a good time for America."[2] He has a bachelor's degree in economics and political science from Pepperdine University, where he first became politically active in student groups.[3] He was a member of the Delta Tau Delta social fraternity. Upon graduation, Logan married his first wife, Elizabeth Patricia Logan (née Johnston), who had attended Pepperdine concurrently with him.

Early career[edit]

During university, Logan accepted a part-time position as an aide to then-Senator Jim Broyhill. After Broyhill lost to Democrat Terry Sanford in the November 1986 election, Logan took a position as a speechwriter for various conservative organizations, before serving as co-head of Conservatives For Life.[2] Logan announced plans to run for Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina in the 1992 elections, but withdrew after a scandal in early 1991, citing family reasons.[1]

Gubernatorial career[edit]

After a failed attempt at the governorship, Logan was elected in 2002.[4] He served two terms.

Senatorial career[edit]

Logan was elected as one of the Senators from North Carolina in 2014.[2] He is still in office.

Vice-presidential candidacy[edit]

After the death of President Donald Trump, acting president Mike Pence chose Logan as his running mate in the 2020 election.[5]

Personal life[edit]

Logan married Elizabeth Patricia Johnston, a fellow graduate of Pepperdine University, in 1987. They have one daughter, Sasha Logan, who is an attorney.[6] When Logan's affair with college student Claire Harel during 1990-91 was discovered after it resulted in a child, Logan and his wife divorced. He married Tina Louise McLeod in 1992. The couple has three daughters.[6]
