Who Read The Greek Novel

The Ancient Greek novel seems to have it's origins in the Hellenistic period, in the large cities of the eastern Mediterranean. Ben Edwin Perry sees the novel as a response to a increasingly sophisticated and complex society that had moved beyond the Greek Epic replacing it with a multitude of literary forms. Tomas Hägg feels that it was literate people (especially women) who were outside large cities looking for romanticism and idealism. Hägg also feels that the novel being a format, that could enjoyed at home further indicates a female audience. Also that the majority of main characters are female is cited by Hägg as indication of female readership. Hägg does not however think that this indicates female writers. Perry on the other hand views them as juvenile literature, citing the inherent idealism. Gilbert Highet supports this assessment by stating "they are all about 18, and think exclusively about their emotions".
