Hello, welcome to your New Page Patrol Academy page! Every person I instruct will have their own page on which I will give them support and tasks for them to complete. Please make sure you have this page added to your watchlist. Your NPP School page has been specifically designed according to you and what you have requested instruction in - for that reason, please be as specific as possible when under my instruction, so that I know the best ways to help you (and do not be afraid to let me know if you think something isn't working).
Make sure you read through Wikipedia:Notability as that's the knowledge which most of the questions I ask you and tasks you do will revolve around.
- How to use this page
This page will be built up over your time in the Academy, with new sections being added as you complete old ones. Each section will end with a task, written in bold type - this might just ask a question, or it might require you to go and do something. You can answer a question by typing the answer below the task; if you have to do something, you will need to provide diffs to demonstrate that you have completed the task. Some sections will have more than one task, sometimes additional tasks may be added to a section as you complete them. Please always sign your responses to tasks as you would on a talk page.
Notability
[edit]When patrolling or reviewing an article, you may often come across articles do not meet the WP:N guidelines, but the editors make the edits in good faith. Please read WP:AGF and do not WP:BITE the new editors.
- A. Notability is a test guidelines to decide whether a given topic warrants its own article in Wikipedia mainspace. Please read Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not, General Notability Guidelines, Specific Notability Guidelines, Stand-alone list before completing the following tasks.
1. In your own words, why it is important to WP:AGF and not WP:BITE new editors.
Answer: New editors are very important for Wikipedia so that the community can grow and gaps left by retired users can be replaced. If we bite a newcomer this can deter them from joining the community. We must treat new comers with kindness and patience as it is very unlikely for a newcomer to all Wikipedia policies and guidelines. By helping newcomers, we can increase the knowledge and perspectives on Wikipedia, thus preserving its neutrality and integrity as a resource and ultimately increasing its values. This why it is important to assume good faith instead of biting new editors.
2. In your own words, how does notability is defined in Wikipedia?
Answer: In terms of notability of the subject it is considered notable if it is covered with sufficient and reliable sources. Not everything can have its own article on Wikipedia. To be simple, notability is defined as a topic which is presumably notable.
For a topic to be notable for an article on Wikipedia-
- It must receive significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject where the sources talk in-length and in-depth.
- It must meet WP:GNG.
- It must not be excluded under WP:NOT policy.
3. Does a step by step instructions on how to "Change a car tire" considered a notable topic in Wikipedia?
Answer: Even though it has many significant coverage on well known independent and reliable sources but it is not notable to have an article on Wikipedia because it falls under WP:NOTGUIDE.
4. What are the differences between A WP:GNG and a specific notability guidelines? how do we determine which one to use when patrolling an article?
Answer: GNG refers to the basic guideline which every article must follow, if an article doesn't it is not suitable for Wikipedia. But specific notability guidelines are applied in specific cases where there may be sufficient sources but the subject has not achieved a specific accomplishment or hasn’t participated in an area to merit an article.
Both the guidelines must be followed while patrolling articles. But since WP:GNG must be followed for every article, if it doesn't then the article can never follow WP:SNG.
5. If an editor creates an article about "2024 Summer Olympics" in 2019 without providing any sources, is the subject considered not notable and why?
Answer: The subject is indeed notable since it is a very notable topic and I think sufficient and reliable sources can also exist if no source exists then it is not suitable for Wikipedia mainspace but since sources will likely exist so 2024 Summer Olympics can have an article which will be expanded and improved by time.
- B. Without considered of sources/content policies and review just based on "subject specific notability" (SSN) "alone" for sake of the exercises below, please answer if the subject meets the SSN guidelines, based on the given content below, and specify under (1) which notability criteria they meet or fail (example - MUSICBI#1 if certain sub set of criteria is applicable) and (2) reasons/explanations.
6. A New York city based 2019 start up software company , specializing in data mining, has just received a USD 200K investor fund.
Answer: Fails WP:ORGCRIT as it has not been the subject of significant coverage in multiple independent reliable sources, also fails WP:ORGDEPTH as the subject is not sufficient to have notability. Also fails WP:ORGSIG as it has been not supported by enough independent sources.
7. Maycee Barber who is a female Ultimate Fighting Championships fighters with the undefeated mixed martial arts record of 7-0 and she is currently ranked #12 in the women's flyweight division.
Answer: Fails WP:NMMA as per date she stands 2 fights under UFC. Also fails WP:MMAORG.
8. A upcoming action drama title "Suleiman the Great" based on the the life of Suleiman the Magnificent, was reported will be in production in December 2019 and to be released on August 2020 in the cinemas.
Answer: Per WP:FUTURE, films that have not been confirmed by reliable sources to have commenced principal photography should not have their own article, as budget issues, scripting and casting issues can interfere with a project well ahead of its filming date. In this case it fails WP:NF as the shooting of the film has not yet began so the film doesn't merit notability. Also fails WP:NFO as the shooting of the film hasn't started yet so it is yet to get any reviews.
9. A political candidates, without any previous or current political position, who is running for November 2019 election for a Senator position in United States with multiple local newspapers coverage of his candidacy.
Answer: Per WP:JUDGE, “politicians and judges who have held international, national or sub national office or have been members of legislative bodies at those levels are presumed to be notable”. In this case, it fails WP:JUDGE.
10. A singer who self produced his first album in May 2019 and his songs are listed in Spotify.
Answer: Fails WP:BAND as only musicians who have been the subject multiple, non trivial published works appearing in sources that are reliable, not self published and are independent of the musician itself are notable. Also almost all singers, rockstars and artists are listed in Spotify who it doesn't make the singer especially notable to have an article on Wikipedia.
- C. Based on which SSN guidelines the below subjects are notable under (1) which notability criteriaMUSICBI#1 (if certain sub set of criteria is applicable) and (2) reasons/explanations
Answer: Meets WP:NACADEMIC as the 8th point stated “The person has been the head or chief editor of a major, well established academic journal in their subject area” which the subject meets in Journal of Economic Psychology. Also meets WP:BIO as the subject has received significant secondary reliable sources which are independent to the subject.
12. Alistair Overeem
Answer: Meets WP:NMMA as he has been in dozens of UFC fights, also passes WP:NKICK in which the subject fought under K-1.
13. Jennifer Lopez
Answer: Meets Wikipedia:Notability (music) as they had songs nominated for a Grammy which meets bullet point 8, also passes WP:NACTOR as the subject has significant roles in multiple notable films, TV shows, stage performances and other production which satisfies point 1. Also meets WP:BIO.
14. Three Mile Island accident
Answer: It was WP:LASTING it states “an event that is a precedent or catalyst for something else of lasting significance is likely to be notable”. Since related events continued every decade ever since the event it is notable. Also meets WP:NNEWS.
15. Persepolis
Answer: Meets WP:GEOFEAT since it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Also passes WP:GEOLAND per the 1st bullet point stating "Event abandoned places can be notable, because notability emcompasses their entire history" and also passes WP:NTEMP as it passes the point stating “notability is not temporary, once a topic has been the subject of significant coverage in accordance with WP:GNG, it does not need to have ongoing coverage.
