History
[edit]Piggly Wiggly Carolina Company was founded by Joseph T. Newton Jr. He believed that if stores had a main warehouse to buy from, instead of each store dealing with dozens of suppliers, the goods could be bought and therefore sold cheaper. Saving up money from his early years, he bought a Piggly Wiggly Franchise from the Piggly Wiggly Corporation. Slowly but surely, he convinced other grocery stores in the area to join the franchise, and soon the smiling Pig head became well known throughout South Carolina and later in Georgia. Thus was the founding of Piggly Wiggly Wholesale.
Originally based in downtown Charleston, South Carolina, Joe Newton and his son in law Burt Schools moved the main warehouse to a nicer and larger spot in North Charleston, SC in 1959. In the decade after, he bought out Piggly Wiggly Carolina (based in Columbia, SC), and merged the two companies as Piggly Wiggly Carolina Co.
Present Company
[edit]Today Piggly Wiggly Carolina Co. has over 100 stores in South Carolina, and many in Georgia as well. Entirely employee owned and privately operated, Piggly Wiggly Carolina Co. employs over 6,000 employees. Branching out, PWCC is involved in several other businesses, including Greenbax Enterprises, Newton Builders, Tri-State Prining, and Stagecoach. There are now three main centers for the company, the warehouse in North Charleston, SC, a second warehouse in Jedburg, SC, and a corporate office at Albemarle Point Center in Charleston, SC.
Programs
[edit]PWCC is based on giving back to the community. In this, the company is constantly running charity events and donating to local non-profit organizations. The Greenbax program has become very successful: a free membership card much like many other national chains, the Pig's Favorite Customer membership allows a customer to earn greenbax points to use on gasoline, free groceries, national park admissions, or many other local activities.
