The first movement is based on a theme which Górecki evolves over the course of eighteen minutes. He layers phrase upon phrase, though each remains distinct. Although the early themes may be strictly modern, the final cadential phrase is rooted in Polish tradition; a decenting semitone preceded by 'turn' of a minor chord.
