Dennis G. Peters (April 17, 1937, Los Angeles, California) is an analytical chemist specializing in electrochemistry and the Herman T. Briscoe Professor at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana where he leads the Peters Group. Peters research focusses on the electrochemical behavior of halogenated organic compounds, more recently moving to focus on transition metal catalysts in regards to the oxidation and reduction of organic species.[1] Over his career, he has authored or co-authored over 210 different publications, 5 analytical chemistry textbooks, and received numerous awards and honors.[2]

Early Life and Education[edit]

Peters was born on April 17, 1937, in Los Angeles, California. He completed his bachelor of science degree in chemistry from the California Institute of Technology in 1958 and graduated cum laude before completing his Ph.D. in analytical chemistry at Harvard University. After completing his Ph.D. in 1962, Peters came to Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.[3]

Career[edit]

Peters began his career at Indiana University in 1962 as an instructor before being named the Herman T. Briscoe Professor of Chemistry in 1975. He served as the chemistry department's graduate student advisor from 1969 to 1971 where he recruited the department's largest incoming class.[4] Throughout his career, Peters has been awarded several teaching and fellow awards. His research has focused on the mechanistic and synthetic properties of the oxidation and reduction of halogenated organic compounds and the electrocatalysis of organic synthesis.[5]
