Dominic O'Connor, Also known as Chunkis is an Irish Esports professional. A Former champion in various Street Fighter titles, including, Super Street Fighter II Super Street fighter II Turbo, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Street fighter Alpha 3, Street Fighter III: Third Strike and Street Fighter IV.
He played an integral part in the formation and development of the European Fighting Game community and was one of the founding members of Cornertrap.com, the organisation behind the European Street Fighter Championships ( Euro 3) and the 2001 Top Gun Street Fighter Alpha 3 Ranking Battles at County Hall. Chunkis has been competing in fighting game tournaments since the early 1990s, and was the first e-sports professional in Ireland. He was selected to represent on the UK National team in 2004 vs Team Japan on Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Street Fighter III: Third Strike, He was the only European player to represent on both games. He was also on UK team with Ryan Hart at Stunfest in 2009 for Street Fighter IV. He has featured in many gaming magazines including Edge, Arcadia and CVG and has also featured in TV programmes such as Gamer TV, Games Across America, Xleague, BBC, Bravo, RTE( Radio telifis Eireann) and the French channel TV5. He also worked as a TV Pundit on Swedish TV for Dreamhack Winter 2009.
Games Industry
[edit]In 2003, Chunkis Worked for Sony Online Entertainment, where he held various positions, including Games Master on Star Wars Galaxies, later moving into operations and finally into Human Resourses.
Sponsorship
[edit]Chunkis gained his first sponsorship opportunity with Electronics Bouteque while playing in the Dynamic-League, a professional fighting game league. The organisation was the first of its kind, offering travel and sponsorship opportunities to top players, it had a monthly magazine that could be purchased in the arcade or online, the magazine displayed tournament results, fighting game tips and tricks and featured many of the UKs top fighting game players.
In 2009, chunkis secured his second major sponsor, this time by professional gaming team Druidz, A Professional esports team from Sweden. He went on to represent the Republic of Ireland in the Street Fighter IV World Tournament at the Electronic Sports World Cup in Paris France in 2010. He was Eliminated by Marn(USA) and the 2014 Evolution Champion Luffy ( France). He was released from his contract in 2011.
Fighting Game Career
[edit]Chunkis has won many European tournaments during his playing career, and has competed in tournaments across Japan and the USA, including Tougeki (sbo) The Word Warrior Tournament(Game Newton), KSKs Gamers Vision Ranking Battle and The Evolution Fighting Game Championships.
Euro 3 (2001)
[edit]Chunkis made his UK debut at the 2001 European Street Fighter Championships, his first tournament for almost 7 years. After a lot of trash talking on the internet he was able to place inside the top 10 on Street Fighter Alpha 2. Despite his poor showing, he gained a lot of respect from the UK players and was adopted as one their own.
