Helmut Kettenmann (* 12. Januar 1955 in Heidelberg) is a German neuroscientist.
Biography[edit]
Helmut Kettenmann studied biology at the University of Heidelberg and as scholar of the Rotary Foundation at the University of Miami. In his diploma thesis at the Heidelberg University in 1980 supervised by Melitta Schachner he dealt with the properties of glial cells which were discovered by Rudolf Virchow in 1856 and represent half of the brain mass. Since that time he has been studying the role and function of glial cells in the normal and pathologic brain. As awardee of The German Academic Scholarship Foundation he got his PhD in Heidelberg 1982.
From 1982 - 1987 he worked as postdoc, from 1987 - 1992 as Heisenberg-scholar at the University of Heidelberg. 1993 he became Head of the research group Cellular Neurosciences at the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in the Helmholtz Association in Berlin. Since 1996 he has been Professor for Cellular Neurobiology at the Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin, since 2020 as Senior Professor. 2020 he took the Chair of Department of Neuroscience at the university (in foundation) of Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology (SIAT Shenzhen) and has established his research group at the Brain Cognition and Brain Disease Institute Shenzhen. His research group in China also studiest he role and function of glial cells in the normal and pathologic brain.
In 1994 he established the meeting series „European Meeting on Glial Cells in Health and Disease", the world's largest biannual conference focusing on glial cells. He chaired it in Berlin in 2003, 2013 and is planning it there for 2023. In 2011 he founded Network Glia and has been its president. Together with Bruce R. Ransom he has been Co-Editor-in-Chief of the neuroscientific journal GLIA since 1988. Kettenmann was President of the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS) from 2008 to 2010 and Chair of the first FENS forum in Berlin in 1998 and 2018. From 2013 - 2015 he served as President of the German Neuroscience Society. Kettenmann published 322 scientific papers and reviews and has an H-Factor of 92 (May 2021).
