Nicaragua, Nicaraguita[edit]
Nicaragua, Nicaraguita is a Nicaraguan folk song written by Carlos Mejia Godoy and his brother Luis Enrique Mejia Godoy. It is the first track out of 35 in the album "Canto Epico al FSLN" recorded in Publiservicios S.A., México DF from 1982 to 1984.[1] The album was recorded as a tribute to the FSLN movement and all of its participates during the Sandinista revolutionary war ending in July 19, 1979.[2] The song was a big hit and " essentially became the country’s anthem after the revolution and it serves as a reminder of the homeland that so many fought for and risked their lives for." (Stampur, 6)[3]. The song was remastered and included in the Son tus Perfumenes Mujer (Aromas de Libertad) 2013 album by Carlos Mejia Godoy featuring Los de Palacaguina.[4] The song "Nicaragua, Nicaraguita" utilizes Spanish guitars, Nicaraguan marimbas, and flutes alternating with voice creating the melody. The ode to the New Nation utilizes metaphors comparing the country to flowers, blood, and honey referencing cultural themes such as the Chief indian Diriangen with descendants, and the honey bearing tree of Tamagas. The Nicaraguan Revolution (Spanish: Revolución Nicaragüense or Revolución Popular Sandinista) encompassed the rising opposition to the Somozadictatorship in the 1960s and 1970s, the campaign led by the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) to violently oust the dictatorship in 1978–79, the subsequent efforts of the FSLN to govern Nicaragua from 1979 until 1990 and the Contra War which was waged between the FSLN and the Contrasfrom 1981-1990.[6] Testimony to the Nicaraguan Revolution, Carlos Mejia Godoy and Luis Enrique Mejia Godoy sing "the glorious revolutionary acts that dethroned the oppressive Somoza family [dynasty]. Within it ["Canto Epico al FSLN" album] they sing in honor of the mountains, heroes, descendants, and the Nation of NIcaragua as a whole celebrating liberty." [7] The song praises Nicaragua's tenacity, environmental beauty, and culture through metaphorical comparisons in order to raise unity, pride, and hope for future generations.[3] [8]
