Context and Influences
Although Trollope’s ‘The Last Chronicle of Barset’ is a work of fiction, it reflects the late 19th century Victorian age (Harvey, 1976). It incorporates concepts such as the importance of religion, the impacts of poverty and the loss of morality as materialism began to emerge. Trollope was also fascinated in the history of moral philosophy (Rogers, 1999), a concept that is concerned with human ethics and the way humans react in certain situations. His novel features plots that centre on human morality such as the impoverished Reverend who is targeted by the powerful Mrs Proudie for an alleged theft all while the wealthy stockbrokers are able to manipulate their way through unfaithful crooked dealings and take their customers’ money. Trollope’s decision to incorporate morality stemmed from the loss of ethics in his society as materialism emerged (Harvey, 1976).
