Nathan Vandergunst (Bruges, June 29, 1999), better known by his pseudonym Acid (pronunciation: eɪsit) is a Flemish youtuber.
His YouTube channel called "Acid" existed since January 2013. On May 14, 2019, the channel reached the mark of 400,000 subscribers. At that time, he was considered the largest Dutch-speaking youtuber in Belgium in terms of subscribers. In 2020, the CEMI (Celine & Michiel) couple surpassed that number and took over the place. He has stopped uploading on his first channel since late 2019 as he can no longer monetize there and continued on his second channel called ACID 2.
Biography
[edit]Vandergunst mainly makes videos about his personal life and things that are happening on the internet at that moment.
At the age of thirteen, Vandergunst started posting videos on the internet platform YouTube. Slightly more than half of his viewers are Dutch, which is why he started talking in a mixture of Flemish and Dutch. At the age of seventeen he was expelled from school. Since then, YouTube has become a full-time job for him.
In 2018, Vandergunst was "ticked out" by the Advertising Ethical Practices Jury. The reason was a video in which Vandergunst called on young people to order his sweaters. He also reported that the young people had to "steal their parents' credit card" in order to pay for the sweater. After violating his main channel's guidelines several times, his revenue on new videos has been cut off. He then continued on his second channel, called ACID 2. At the end of 2021, he released the single Go, Acid! out, which was his debut single. The song was in the Flemish Ultratop 50 for 3 weeks, with place 41 as the highest listing. They have also played this song at several festivals, including Rock Werchter.
YouTube feud with CEMI
[edit]In August 2020, there was a riot with YouTube channel Celine & Michiel, CEMI for short. In a feud that received huge media attention, Acid was accused of cyberbullying by the couple. He had made a fuss with a reaction video to a popular video clip of the couple, which was taken offline a few days later. Acid himself has denied that he was cyberbullying. Several media have described the fight between Acid and CEMI as a YouTube war. As the feud derailed, hate messages and death threats from fans were exchanged on both sides.
A mother of a 12-year-old girl who starred in the CEMI clip considered filing a complaint with Vandergunst. Eventually, YouTube intervened by removing videos that violated the bullying policy. The VRT then opened a debate about the influence of the danger of cyberbullying. Flemish Minister of Media Benjamin Dalle spoke out to draw up a code of conduct for influencers.
On January 10, 2021, Acid again lashed out at Celine & Michiel in a video about animal abuse and bread breeders.
