From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Trebonianus Gallus was chosen as the new emperor by the Danube armies, but the senate in Italy chose Hostilian, the 13 year old son of Decius. Trebonianus Gallus decided to accept Hostilian as co-emperor in order to prevent another civil war. He made peace with the Goths, allowing them to withdraw from the Roman Empire with the Thracian booty and agreed to pay tribute. This treaty made him very impopular with the soldiers.

Hostilian died in Rome from the plague after only a few months of rule, making Trebonianus Gallus the unchallenged ruler of the Roman Empire. King Shapur I profitted from the death of Decius and invaded the Roman Empire, conquering Roman Mesopotamia and Osroene. The plague was so severe, killing so many people, that there weren't enough recruits for the Roman army. The Goths, Carpi and Sarmatians, commanded by king Cniva of the Goths used, this opportunity for another invasion, sacking Moesia and Thrace. The Goths attacked the Thracian coast from the sea in 252. The coming 20 years, the lower Danube was invaded every year and some border areas were in Gothic/Carpi hands for several years.

Commander Aemilianus defeated the Goths and Carpi in Thrace and Moesia, chasing them into their homelands in 253. The Roman soldiers of the Danube armies chose him as emperor and Aemilianus marched to Italy. The armies of Trebonianus Gallus and Aemilianus fought battle near Rome at the Interamna Nahars. Trebonianus Gallus was defeated, tried to flee, but was killed by his own soldiers.
