Ruth Pelupessy (27 April 1938 – 21 October 1996)[1] was an Indonesian actress, model, designer and businesswoman. Together with Suzzanna and Mieke Wijaya, she is known as a female antagonist in the world of Indonesian horror films.[2]

Ruth began her career in the Indonesian film industry by starring in Salah Asuhan (1972) which was an adaptation of the novel Salah Asuhan by Abdoel Moeis in 1928. After that, she played a lesbian female character along with Mieke Wijaya in the film Figures (1973), and then played supporting player in the film Virgin Secrets (1975) directed by Ali Shahab. Ruth then won the Citra Cup award for Best Supporting Actress at the Indonesian Film Festival in 1976. She is best known as Darminah in the film Satan's Slaves (1982).

Early life[edit]

Ruth as a child

Ruth Pelupessy was born on April 27, 1938 on Bangka Island, Dutch East Indies, as the eldest daughter of Jacob Pelupessy and Christina Moniyung.[1]

She has three younger sisters namely Wangi Joda (16 January 1940 – 29 June 2013), Joyce Pelupessy (born 1941), and Hanny Pelupessy (born 2 May 1942).[1]

Ruth has Dutch blood from her father and Manado blood from her mother.[1] Her father worked as a Dutch soldier, while her mother worked as a civil servant on Bangka Island.[1]

After her father died in 1942 in the war against the Japanese occupation of Bangka Island, Ruth and her mother and their three younger siblings then moved to the city of Bandung.[1] Ruth then studied at the Girls Intelligence Teacher School (SGKP), where she sat on the same bench as actress Rima Melati.[1]

In 1960, Ruth Pelupessy established a bamboo and rattan furniture business at her residence on Jln. Slamet Riyadi, Matraman, East Jakarta.[3]

The business was then successful because Ruth managed to market its products from Jakarta to Bali, Ruth earned an income of Rp. 55,000 for each set of furniture designs that were successfully sold.[3]

Personal life[edit]

Ruth Pelupessy describes herself as a feminist and devout Christian, she is one of the supporters of the 1973 Marriage Bill.[3] Ruth also rejects the practice of polygamy in the household.[3]

Marriage, relationships, and children[edit]

Ruth Pelupessy married for the first time to a man from Manado named Richard Turangan in August 1960 in the city of Bandung.[4] After marriage, they then decided to move and live in Jakarta.[4] From this first marriage they were had two sons, namely:

  • Ricky Turangan (17 November 1961 – 21 October 2022), who married Peni Wuri Turangan on 16 December 1991 and had three children, namely:
  1. Nansih Purwanti
  2. Kenan Caesarea Turangan
  3. Keni Caesarea Turangan
  • Rory Turangan (born 20 December 1962), who is married to Noni Sumendap (born 3 August 1970) and has two children namely:
  1. Catherine Amanda Edeni (born October 21, 1991)
  2. Kevin Valentino Turangan (born January 31, 1994)

In 1968, because of frequent disputes in their household, Ruth and Richard then decided to divorce.[4] This then led to a struggle for custody of their two children, and led to Rima Melati then hiring the services of an attorney Lukman Wiriadinata to assist Ruth in obtaining custody of her two children.[5] This later worked, as the Central Jakarta Religious Court granted custody of their two children to Ruth.[5]

Ruth Pelupessy married for the second time with actor Hendra Cipta (2 October 1947 – 24 September 2011), on 25 May 1977, in Jakarta.[6] However, in January 1979, Ruth filed for divorce against Hendra at the Central Jakarta Religious Court due to the frequent quarrels between them, as well as the differences in their religions. From this marriage, they did not have any offspring.[7]

In 1973, Ruth Pelupessy reportedly had an affair with actor Dicky Zulkarnaen, her co-star in the film Wrong Upbringing.[3] The news emerged because of the cheek kiss scene that the two of them did in the film.

Ruth herself denied the news by saying that she was only following the scenario directed by director Asrul Sani. As a result of this news, the status of Ruth, who at that time was a widow, was then made the butt of gossip by the press and the media. Even a portrait of her kissing Dicky was displayed in several weekly magazines and newspapers in the same year.

In 1974, it was reported that Ruth had another affair with a discotheque manager in Central Jakarta, and it was even reported that she was pregnant with a child from the result of her affair with the manager. Ruth then again denied the news of his affair, she said that she was dating actor Hendra Cipta at that time, and said the journalist who wrote the news was "crazy".

Fight with Yoseano Waas[edit]

On August 22, 1974, Ruth Pelupessy was involved in a fight with actor Yoseano Waas, at the Aries Film office, Central Jakarta.[8] This was due to the harassing statements made by Yoseano towards Ruth.[8]

In Yoseano's interview with Bintang Film Magazine on August 21, 1974, he issued a statement that smelled of objectification towards Ruth, by trying to give an assessment of every part of her body, and saying that Ruth was a warm person with her feminine instincts.[8] He also added that Ruth was nothing more "than a selfish woman, and always wanted to win alone against her partner."[8]

The face is quite attractive, even further it can be said to have a seductive type of face; but because Ruth, who is already sweet, is still added with a sale, her smile makes people get bored quickly. As for the body, I would like to say twiggy, there is still fat in several parts of the body, you can say that it is sexy, there are no visible protrusions that can stimulate. As a friend, it's quite fun, because Ruth has the skill of acting with a smile that can be adjusted so that it can evoke a pleasant friendly atmosphere, where every conversation is interspersed with spoiled laughter, and makes people feel at home wishing with her. As a mother, she is quite concerned about managing the house and also for her children, but can be a bit cranky. Pleasant enough for the opposite sex, because secretly she is able to provide warmth, because that warmth comes from the demands of her feminine instinct which is quite fiery. And Ruth wanted a real man. As a wife? Wait a minute, why wait? yes because Ruth is the type of woman who is very selfish, wants to win alone and too many commands where if you are a weak husband, then you are nothing more than a servant inside and out.[9]

Death[edit]

Ruth Pelupessy died at her residence in Kayu Manis, Matraman, East Jakarta, on October 21, 1996, due to suffering from heart disease at the age of 58.[10] Her body was later buried at the Kampung Kandang TPU, Jagakarsa, South Jakarta.[11]
