Welcome to Daniel Benfield's second talk page archive

on Wikipedia. You know, that free encyclopedia filled with IP addresses making useless and vandalizing edits? That one.

Introduction

More old stuff, yeah. I got all this from my first Summer on Wikipedia (placed as June 20 – September 24, 2009), and through July it's all negative. It wasn't like I was trying to get in trouble here, merely that my help was usually seen as irrelevant.

...Well, at least during this particular stretch below. Daniel Benfield (talk) 05:48, 27 January 2010 (UTC) {originally written 13:05, 11 August 2009 (UTC)}

Welcome to Wikipedia, and thank you for your contributions. One of the core policies of Wikipedia is that articles should always be written from a neutral point of view. A contribution you made to Any Number appears to carry a non-neutral point of view, and your edit may have been changed or reverted to correct the problem. Please remember to observe our core policies. Thank you. --Smjg (talk) 15:48, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

Please do not use styles that are unusual or difficult to understand in articles, as you did in Jackpot (game show). There is a Manual of Style that should be followed. Please stop adding random dashes and semicolons. Sottolacqua (talk) 11:12, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

Dates

[edit]

The recent edit you made to Swingtown was unnecessary. I have read on your user page that you have a particular thing about dates. I suggest that you do not let personal attitudes affect your editing of articles. The dates need to have specific references, even if a show starts and ends in the same year, for the simple fact that it needs to be idiot-proof. I know, it's annoying, but we have to write the article in a consistent manner for everyone who reads it. I'm sure you will understand. Nicholasm79 (talk) 06:39, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on Wheel of Fortune (U.S. daytime game show). Note that the three-revert rule prohibits making more than three reversions on a single page within a 24 hour period. Additionally, users who perform a large number of reversions in content disputes may be blocked for edit warring, even if they do not technically violate the three-revert rule. If you continue, you may be blocked from editing. Please do not repeatedly revert edits, but use the talk page to work towards wording and content that gains a consensus among editors. If necessary, pursue dispute resolution. Please stop adding unnecessary fancruft minutia and capitalizing random words. Sottolacqua (talk) 18:32, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

Please do not use talk pages such as Wheel of Fortune (U.S. daytime game show) for general discussion of the topic. They are for discussion related to improving the article. They are not to be used as a forum or chat room. If you have specific questions about certain topics, consider visiting our reference desk and asking them there instead of on article talk pages. See here for more information. Thank you. Sottolacqua (talk) 19:04, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

Dates

[edit]
"This also applies to numerical representations - one should not write "4-3-1978 to 6-30-1978" as it uses up a few seconds that could make all the difference between a rush-job and taking your time. "4-3 to 6-30-1978" uses less space, ink, and time - especially if you're low on all three."

You missed off the most important reason not to write "4-3-1978": it's ambiguous. -- Smjg (talk) 08:29, 24 July 2009 (UTC)

Thanks, man. I've added a small mention of that on my user page. Daniel Benfield (talk) 17:19, 24 July 2009 (UTC)

Please stop. If you continue to delete or edit legitimate talk page comments, as you did at Talk:Wheel of Fortune (U.S. daytime game show), you will be blocked for vandalism. Sottolacqua (talk) 15:44, 26 July 2009 (UTC)

Please stop. If you continue to use disruptive or hard to read formatting, as you did in Jeopardy!, you will be blocked from editing Wikipedia. Please stop adding random dashes to articles. Hi Daniel,

I have restored the content you removed here. According to your edit summary, "What's The Story? aired in eleven timeslots during its run, not Down You Go (which ran for over five years)" you believe Down You Go didn't air in 11 different timeslots during its run. According to the reference, however, it did. If you get the 2007 edition of Brooks and Marsh's book (the latest version), this is on page 386:

May-Jul 1951, DuM Wed 9:00-9:30
Jul-Sept 1951 DuM Thu 9:30-9:30 (sic)
Sept 1951-Jun 1952 DuM Fri 9-9:30
Jul 1952-Sept 1952 DuM Fri 8-8:30
Oct 1952-Apr 1954 DuM Fri 10-30-11:00
May 1954-Jun 1954 DuM Wed 9:30-10:30
(no schedule listed for Jun 1954-Sept 1954)
Sept 1954-Jan 1955 DuM Wed 10:00-10:30
Jan 1955-May 1955 DuM Fri 10:30-11:00
Jun 1955-Sept 1955 CBS Sat 9:30-10:00
Sept 1955-Jun 1956 ABC Thu 9:30-10:00
Jun 1956-Sept 1956 NBC Sat 7:30-8:00
This adds up to eleven time slot changes in five years. Because the program doesn't appear to have run at all from June to September of 1954, according to the reference, I'd say it's just about five years, and have adjusted the text accordingly (thanks for spotting that).
I've also restored Edie Adams Upper New York Bay dumping incident section, as I feel it's entirely germane to discuss the destruction of DuMont kinescopes in an article which discusses why Down You Go isn't available for viewing anymore. The stated reason for its removal (because the content, two sentences, already appears in another article) doesn't seem valid: Wikipedia is not paper, and can absolutely contain a sentence or two which appear in another article, provided it's relevant to the article. It is.
I've also linked to Letter to Loretta instead of Loretta Young on the section which discusses The Loretta Young Show (aka Letter to Loretta). I do want to thank you for your improvements to the article over the past year, including a good number of excellent corrections and other improvements, but I don't feel the current edits improved the article, as they removed valid (and referenced!) material. There's so much unreferenced, incorrect material on WP, that these removals came as a shock.
Best wishes and happy editing, Firsfron of Ronchester 04:45, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
Hey, thanks for setting me straight on that. Also, I have the "EOTVGS" (Encyclopedia of TV Game Shows) listings on my computer, and I never came across anything stating that the show took a three-month hiatus in 1954.
Also, how could I perchance make my talkpage look like yours? I can honestly say that I have no clue on that front... --Daniel Benfield (talk) 13:15, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
Hey Daniel, I haven't read The Encyclopedia of TV Game Shows, but it sounds like it's a worthwhile resource. Thanks for the tip; I always like finding new references. Yes, according to Brooks and Marsh (who list only prime-time dates), DYG wasn't airing (at least in prime time) during Summer 1954. It may have run during an earlier time period, but usually they will mention it if it has.
On the other note, I've got a user subpage at User:Firsfron/talkpageheader that has the basic code for my talk page, which then gets transcluded onto the top of my talk page. Feel free to modify the code and use it for your own, as I modified it from someone else's talk page. :)
Best wishes, Firsfron of Ronchester 14:28, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
I see you got the new talk page design to work. :) Firsfron of Ronchester 01:39, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

Hey, Daniel

[edit]

Hello, Daniel. I just wanted to tell you that in regards to that Wheel of Fortune layout from 1975, one reason why it doesn't have Bankrupt at the very top was because the other three layouts weren't made by me. If you click on the other three layouts, you'll see someone else, and he has a Wheel template you can download and use on Inkscape. --Germanname1990 (talk) 23:07, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

Hi. I was mulling proposing Sqrambled Scuares for deletion on notability grounds (specifically the proposed WP:BROADCAST notability standard), but I noticed that you've put a goodly amount of work into it and wanted to see if you could allay my concerns before I decided for sure whether or not to send the article to AFD. Is this show more than what it appears to be: a cable-access game show in a tiny market? Does it have non-trivial, third-party coverage in reliable sources? Let me know your thoughts. Thanks. --Dynaflow babble 05:02, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

While I still feel a bit iffy about the show's notability, you make a decent case for its being at least de jure notable, so I'll let it be. Thanks for hunting down those third-party sources. --Dynaflow babble 11:17, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
