Bio
[edit]About me
[edit]My name is Daniel and I live in Washington State. Some of my favorite things to do is play video games, skate, and watch movies. Some of my favorite video games are Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Earthbound, Goldeneye 007, Super Smash Bro's, etc. I'm not very good at skating but I have fun just riding around and trying to practice tricks. I went snowboarding once and I liked it a lot so its also safe to say I'm a fan of snowboarding. Snowboard's were originally named 'Snurfer'[1]. I also really enjoy listening to music. One of the things I wish more people did was to expand their music palate because I see so many people only listening to one type of music and trash on other genres and its a shame because they're missing out on some really good music due to their stubbornness.
My Wikipedia interests
[edit]If I were to continue using Wikipedia in the future I would probably use it for personal enrichment. There are some topics that I would like to learn more about and Wikipedia would help me, for instance I would like to learn more about the Medieval Ages. Wikipedia has tons of information regarding that era.
Article Evaluation
[edit]About a year ago I discovered a punk rock band called Bad Brains. They play a certain subgenre of punk rock called hardcore. Hardcore punk is much more intense, and in your face with faster drum playing, and simple yet effective guitar notes. When I first discovered them, I was instantly intrigued because I had never heard such a style of music with that much energy, and intensity. Fast forward to the present and Bad Brains is one of my favorite bands to listen to. I visited the Bad Brains article on Wikipedia, and found three aspects of it worth commenting on: Somewhat biased language, non reliable sources, and facts that are not sourced by appropriate sources.
The first aspect I immediately noticed is the biased language, and sentences sprinkled throughout the article. They seem to give unnecessary praise to the band when describing them, for instance "Bad Brains developed a very fast and intense punk rock sound which came to be labeled "hardcore", and was often played faster and more emphatically than many of their peers."[2] "The band developed an early reputation in Washington D.C., due in part to the relative novelty of an entirely black band playing punk rock at the time, but also due to their high-energy performances and undeniable talent."[3] I of course like the band, but the article should be as unbiased as possible, and the bias in the article makes me think that the article was written by a fan of the band which would cause some amount of bias to appear in the article if that's the case.
The second aspect I noticed is the non reliable sources used in the article. Some of the sources were other cited articles that have been deleted, so we can't really verify how trustworthy or truthful they were, for instance "Barry, John (October 15, 2008). "I Against I". Baltimore City Paper. Retrieved January 25, 2012.", or they were not trustworthy sources such as a music review website that is open to anyone to write whatever they want, which are always heavily opinionated and don't offer any hard facts.
The third aspect I noticed was that some of the facts stated in the article were sourced by inappropriate sources. The aforementioned music review website was cited as a source for a fact that claimed the lead singer of the band H.R. was at fault for breaking up the band in 1995. "However, the reunion did not last for long, because of H.R.'s erratic behavior while performing with the band, such as punching their manager in the face, beating a skinhead and a security guard in separate incidents throughout the tour. These incidents prompted the Bad Brains to break up once again.[12][13]." This could very well be true, but the cited source used was a review of one of their albums that they reunited to produce. That's all it was, just a review of the album. The review does mention H.R.'s behavior, but it never incited that it was the reason for their breakup.
In conclusion I think that this article is somewhat biased in nature due to the language that was being used when describing the band, which felt like they were praising them when this should be an unbiased article documenting the bands history, not a love letter, the non reliable sources being used to back up some of the 'facts' which felt more like claims really, and lastly because of the inappropriate usage of cited sources on certain facts, such as claiming H.R.'s actions where the reason they broke up and then cite an album review as the source.
