Bob Pinedo[edit]

Introduction[edit]

Herbert Michael (Bob) Pinedo (Willemstad (Curaçao), August 25th 1943) is a Dutch oncologist. He was professor from 1979 till 2008 at the Free University of Amsterdam and founder of the VUmc Cancer Center in Amsterdam. In 1997 he received the Dutch Spinozapremie.

Study and Work[edit]

Pinedo went to study medicine in 1960 at the Rijksuniversiteit Leiden. He specialized in internal medicine and got his PhD in 1972 in Leiden, his thesis subject was renovascular hypertension. As head of the clinic of internal medicine at the University Medical Centre Utrecht he noticed the one sided Dutch surgical approach. He deepened his knowledge in other potential therapy strategies and studied at the National Cancer institute in The USA for 2 years. In 1979 he started as a professor in medical oncology at the VU Medical Centre. He also became head of the pharmacologic laboratory of the Dutch Cancer Institute. He furthermore was founder (and between 2003 and 2005 director) of the VuMC Cancer Centre Amsterdam. In 2008 Pinedo became emeritus professor. In his “goodbye lecture” he plead for raising the age for population based cancer screening. Nowadays, after his “retirement” as a professor, he is advises several companies and Universities i.e. for the University of Twente where he, together with a team, develops a pil to detect cancer in a very early stage. In 2010 he also founded the Fundation Prevention, a screening clinic in Willemstad, Curacao, for which he still works and organizes screening programs for the citizens of Curaçao. Pinedo was co-founder of the scientific journal Annals of Oncology and of The Oncologist. He also was president of the Federation of European Cancer Society and of the European Society of Medical Oncology.

Awards[edit]

In 1995 Pinedo received de Josef Steiner Krebsforschungspreis, in 1997 the Spinozapremie, in 2006 the IJ-prijs of the Amsterdam municipality,[1] and in 2014 he, as one of the first European scientists, received the American David A. Karnofsky Memorial Award. He is a member of the Royal Society of Medicine and the Koninklijke Nederlandse Academie van Wetenschappen. Pinedo is knight in the Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw en Commandeur in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau. In 2006 the Bob Pinedo Cancer Care Prize was introduced, an annual price for people who made a difference in the oncologic field either in cancer-therapy or in cancer-care.
