From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Antisemitism on Wikipedia refers to the concerns raised about the portrayal and treatment of Jewish-related topics, particularly those involving Zionism and Israel, on the platform. Critics argue that some Wikipedia articles use charged language and framing that may perpetuate antisemitic stereotypes or present a biased view of Jewish history and the modern state of Israel.

For instance, the article on Zionism describes the movement as an "ethno-cultural nationalist movement" that aimed for the establishment of a Jewish state through the "colonization of a land outside of Europe." This description has been criticized for employing the term "colonization" in a way that reflects its modern connotations of imperial conquest, rather than the historical context in which early Zionists used it. Despite objections that the term's usage is contentious and potentially misleading, the language has not been revised to reflect a more nuanced understanding.

Similarly, in the article on the Recognition of same-sex unions in Israel, there have been repeated efforts to characterize same-sex marriage as "illegal" in Israel, even though same-sex couples can legally marry abroad and enjoy many of the same rights and benefits as heterosexual couples within the country. Critics argue that this framing oversimplifies the legal situation and contributes to a narrative that unfairly paints Israel as homophobic, ignoring the legal protections and recognition that same-sex couples do receive.

These issues highlight ongoing concerns about bias and the challenges of maintaining neutrality on Wikipedia, particularly regarding topics related to Zionism, Israel, and Jewish identity. Critics argue that the persistence of such narratives may contribute to a broader environment of antisemitism on the platform.

Colonial Language

[edit]

Wikipedia's editors have defined Zionism as including "the establishment of a Jewish state through the colonization of a land outside of Europe."

This language has been contested by numerous users, as evidenced by discussions on the Zionism talk page.

I think User:האופה has a point that the term "colonial project" may be inflammatory and therefore constitute POV editing in today's political environment. With luck, we might find a way to include that term as a direct quote from some Zionist from late 19th century Europe in a way that User:האופה and others will find acceptable.

Per Wikipedia's own entry, colonization is "a process of establishing control over foreign territories or peoples for the purpose of exploitation."

The Jewish diaspora is a recognized event in which Jews or Israelites were forced out of their ancestral homeland of Israel and spread through the world. The epicenter of this diaspora is therefore the very land in question.

Therefore at the very least, the use of the term "colonization" without caveat is inflammatory at best, and malicious at worst.
