Dominik Heinrich (born August 25, 1980, Kempten, Germany) is a German-born designer, educator, and innovator specializing in artificial intelligence (AI) in design. He is currently based in New York City, USA, where he serves as an Adjunct Professor at Pratt Institute and Guest Lecturer at Georgetown University.[1][2] Heinrich holds multiple patents for AI-driven technologies. He has received numerous accolades, including a Cannes Lions Silver in Innovation for his work on *Voice Stamp* for United States Postal Service,[3] and a D&AD Impact Graphite Pencil for project *SIGNS*, allowing people with hearing disabilities to interact with smart voice assistants using gestures.[4]
Early Life and Education
[edit]Dominik Heinrich was born into a family of entrepreneurs. His mother, Gisela, co-founded one of Germany's first women-only gyms in 1984, while his father, Peter, was an engineer and technical professor. Heinrich's early interest in creativity and problem-solving, including reshaping Lego bricks into custom designs, laid the foundation for his career.
Heinrich studied business economics at the State Vocational School II in Kempten. He later pursued courses in sustainability design at Pratt Institute in New York and the New Space Economy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Professional Education in Cambridge.
Career
[edit]In 2013, Heinrich co-founded Lab13 by MRM, an innovation design studio within McCann Worldgroup. Lab13, under Heinrich’s leadership, expanded to major cities, including New York City, Detroit, Manchester, and Tokyo, focusing on integrating design thinking and engineering methods for top brands, including Nestlé, GM, and Coca-Cola.[5] Lab13 contributed to MRM’s recognition as one of the "Best Workplaces for Innovators" by Fast Company in 2021 and 2022.[6]
In November 2022, Heinrich co-founded Creative AI Academy with Anthony C. Jones. The organization focuses on training professionals in the creative and design industries to integrate AI into their workflows.
In 2024, Heinrich joined The Coca-Cola Company as the Global AI Design Lead. In this contractor role, he pioneered adaptive and dynamic design systems, leveraging AI to enhance brand consistency and user experiences globally.[7]
In addition to his professional achievements, Heinrich established the AI Design Certificate Course at Pratt Institute, which focuses on equipping designers and professionals with the skills to integrate artificial intelligence into creative processes. The program covers cutting-edge topics such as generative AI, dynamic design systems, and the human-AI relationship in design.[8]
Thought Leadership and Public Speaking
[edit]Heinrich has spoken at major industry events, focusing on AI’s integration into creative workflows and its role in shaping human-AI collaboration. His notable engagements include:
- AutoTech Detroit (2023): Spoke on "From UI to AI - How Invisible Interfaces Will Drive a Hyper-Personalized World," discussing the future of AI-driven interfaces.[9]
- AI Summit New York (2024): Presented on generative AI in design workflows and the concept of "thinking design."[10]
- Most Contagious London (2024): Delivered the talk "Don't Believe the AI Hype," addressing misconceptions about artificial intelligence.[11]
- Adobe MAX Miami (2024): Participated in the panel "Moving at the Speed of Customers: Next-Gen Content Supply," addressing AI’s role in content creation and supply chain optimization.[12]
Space Economy Focus
[edit]Heinrich has recently focused on the space economy, exploring how AI design can contribute to space exploration strategies.
In December 2024, he spoke at The Space Economy Summit by The Economist in Lisbon, addressing AI’s role in commercializing space exploration.[13]
He was featured in a Payload Space by The Economist article, discussing the opportunities for leveraging AI design to enhance consumer experiences and expand into space-focused strategies.[14]
Patents
[edit]Heinrich holds several patents for AI-driven technologies, including:
- **Digital Stamps**: A system replacing physical postage with digital alternatives.[15]
- **Intelligent Collection Box**: Systems and methods for an intelligent mail collection box.[16]
- **Smart Item Receptacle**: A device for secure delivery of packages that notifies recipients via AI.[17]
