Jeroen Smit (Gorinchem, January 3, 1963), is a Dutch economist and journalist. From September 2011 to September 2015, he was professor of journalism at the University of Groningen.

Education and career[edit]

After primary school, Smit attended pre-university education at the Alexander Hegius School Community in Deventer, where he studied Russian, among other things.

He studied business administration at the University of Groningen, after which he soon made the switch to journalism. He was editor for 'Het Financieele Dagblad', head of economics at 'Algemeen Dagblad' and editor-in-chief and publisher of Reed Elsevier’s weekly business magazine 'FEM / De Week' from 2000 to 2002.

He has been active as a freelance journalist since 2004. In addition to writing columns and comments on business and management topics, he also presents radio and TV programs. He presented BNR Laat and Marktveroveraars for BNR Nieuwsradio, and the TV programs 'Nova' and 'Buitenhof' for the NPS.

As an investigative journalist, Smit gained fame by writing books about two spectacular debacles that hit Dutch business in the first decade of the new century, namely 'Het Drama Ahold' (2004) and 'De Prooi, blinde trots breekt ABN Amro' (2008) . 'Het Drama Ahold' was awarded the 'management book of the year' prize in 2005.

The book 'De Prooi, blinde trots breekt ABN Amro', was published on October 30, 2008, exactly one year after the dissolution of the bank. The book was offered to Frank Heemskerk, Secretary of State for Economic Affairs and former employee of ABN Amro. More than 250,000 copies have since been sold. The book won several prizes including the 'De Loep', the prize for the best investigative journalism awarded by the VVOJ (Association of Investigative Journalists) 2009. At the beginning of 2010, Smit received the Machiavelli prize for "De Prooi". Their theater adaptation premiered for 'Het Nationaal Toneel' on 10 March 2012 at the 'Koninklijke Schouwburg' in The Hague.

At the end of 2010, the NPS broadcasted its TV series Leiders Gezocht. In that program he looks for the answer to the question: what kind of leadership is needed in the 21st century?

On September 1, 2011, he was appointed professor of Journalism at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Groningen. He resigned as a professor in September 2015 and returned to work as a journalist.
