Points of Interest in Northgate[edit][edit]

The Western Museum of Mining & Industry[edit]

The Western Museum of Mining & Industry was opened in 1970[2] and accredited by the American Alliance of Museums in 1979[3]. This site is dedicated to the collection, preservation, and interpretation of America's western mining heritage[4]. The museum features over 5,000 artifacts including a 1895 Corliss Steam Engine. The museum also hosts events on location, including the Pikes Peak Celtic Festival in 2019[5], further drawing visitors into this Colorado neighborhood.

U.S. Air Force Academy[edit]

U.S. Air Force Academy was created by an act of Congress on April 1, 1954. It operated temporarily at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, CO, before transferring to its permanent home in the Northgate area of Colorado Springs in 1958[6]. The Academy is one of only five service academies in the United States.

The Club at Flying Horse Golf Course[edit]

The Club at Flying Horse features a Tom Weiskopf-designed signature 18-hole golf course, which first opened in 2005. This course features Professional Golfers' Association of America events each year, including Pro-Am events, PGA Professional, and Senior PGA Professional contests[7].

Smith Creek Natural Area[edit]

The Smith Creek Natural Area is a 99-acre open space[8] at the northern-most border of the Northgate community. It features a running creek, many trails for hiking, a pond, and is home to the Preble's Meadow Jumping Mouse, which is an endangered species and is currently protected by the U.S. Endangered Species Act[9]. This area serves as a high quality riparian habitat, providing refuge for a variety of mammals and migrating bird species.
