Background
[edit]Heather Horton was born and raised in Burlington, Ontario, Canada. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from McMaster University, and then graduated from the Interpretive Illustration program at Sheridan College. She joined the Abbozzo Gallery in Toronto in 2004, and she has had numerous solo and group exhibitions since. In 2007, she was the profile artist for an episode of The Artist’s Life[1], a television series produced by Bravo! Canada. She lived in the Yukon Territory from 2013 until 2015 when she returned to Burlington.
Heather's work can be found in private and corporate collections in Canada, The United States, Germany, and The United Kingdom. The Government of Ontario's permanent art collection includes her 2008 painting Jade, Waiting[2], and a selection of her paintings is in the collection of the Canadian Embassy in Ankara, Turkey.
Eight of Heather's paintings were used as set pieces in Paul Feig’s film A Simple Favor (film). Production Designer Jeffery Sage said that “her quiet images of women in solitude provided an interesting point-of-view in the house of the troubled Emily” [3]. Emily, a portrait of Blake Lively, was painted by Heather as a commission specifically for the film and inserted digitally during post-production[4].
Style and Critical Reception
[edit]Heather is a contemporary artist of the figurative art style. She uses oil paints on canvas or wood with a traditional approach to brushstrokes, tone, and composition to portray modern subjects, usually in isolation. Common themes of her work are aloneness, internal states, and personal contemplation, often with the subject distorted by being underwater, or behind clear plastic curtains, to emphasise the sense of alienation. She also paints still lifes, portraits, and landscapes — in her words, "natural people/objects in natural surroundings… environments that are special to them, with minimal posing and no pretense". [5].
David Balzer wrote in the September 2017 issue of Toronto Life Magazine “what is outside Horton’s scenes seems as important as what is in them; subjects often register an unrepresented disturbance, or gaze longingly away from the viewer”.
