Cogburn is an American derivative of the Scottish surname "Cockburn" and a segment of that larger international family that sprung up during the late medieval period in lowland Scotland.
Family Origins[edit]
It is believed there are multiple immigrant families that assumed this derivative, either from scribal error at time of immigration (due to phonetic difference) or a deliberate change for political or other environmental reasons.
A large subset of Cogburns are descendents of a Central Texas Cockburn/Cogburn family that adopted the Cogburn derivative in the late 1800's.
Fictional characters[edit]
- Rooster Cogburn, a character in the films True Grit and Rooster Cogburn
