The New York Metro Pipe Band (NYMPB) is a grade three pipe band representing the New York metropolian area in the United States of America. The band won the Grade 3B World Pipe Band Championship in 2011.[1]

New York Metro regularly competes in Highland Games competitions sanctioned by the Eastern United States Pipe Band Association in the eastern United States and in August 2011 travelled to Scotland for the World Pipe Band Championships. The band wears the Ancient Red Gordon tartan.[2]

History of the Band[edit]

The New York Metro Pipe Band formed in January 2010 under the leadership of Pipe Major Michael Mahoney and Drum Sergeant Adrian Mordaunt with the goal of building a world-class, internationally competitive band comprised of the best pipers and drummers in the New York metropolitan area. Members of the band hail from New York City, Long Island, Westchester and New Jersey.

2010[edit]

In July 2010, the band placed first in its debut at the Grade III Eastern United States Pipe Band Championships at Glasgowlands, Massachusetts, winning both the March, Strathspey & Reel and Medley competitions. The following day the band placed first again at the Rockland County Feis. Later that summer, the band captured the Northeastern United States Championship with a first place finish at the Capital District Scottish Games in Schenectady, New York.

On Saturday, November 6th, 2010 the band realized its ultimate goal for 2010 with the debut of their full-length concert, Premiere.  Performed at the New York Hall of Science, Premiere was a notable success. The repertoire of contemporary and traditional tunes, along with several original works by the band’s in-house composers demonstrated the band’s commitment to furthering the art of piping and drumming both on and off the competition field.

2011[edit]

The band began the 2011 EUSPBA competition season with a second place finish at the Colonial Highland Games in Fair Hill, Maryland in May. From there, New York Metro took the first place prize at the Bonnie Brae Scottish Games, the Round Hill Highland Games, the Rockland County Feis and the Capitol District Scottish Games.

In August, the band made the trip to Glasgow, Scotland to compete in the World Pipe Band Championships at Glasgow Green. After months of hard work, and after only eighteen months in existence, New York Metro won first place in the grade 3B medley competition, including the Best Drum Corps trophy, and was crowned the 2011 World Champions.[3]

On September 16, 2011, members of the drum corps performed live on stage with the alternative rock band MRNORTH [4] at a concert releasing the band's latest album Everything. New York Metro Drum Sergeant Adrian Mordaunt is the drummer for MRNORTH, an alternative rock band from Dublin, Ireland now working under the American label Rock Ridge Music.

Finishing a successful competition season, on September 25, 2011 the band won the Celtic Classic grade three invitational competition in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
