The use of grenades during The Great War or what is now known as World War 1, has developed more and more throughout the war. There have been many types of grenades used and created by both opposing sides of the war and their allies. Multiple types of grenades were developed like the hand grenade. A hand grenade is a small, hand held explosive that would detonate a couple seconds after a trigger was set off.[1] Some different types of hand grenades used during World War 1 included a defensive fragmentation, offensive blast, a gas grenade, and a phosphorus grenade. The defensive fragmentation grenade was the most common type of grenade. It had to be used in a protected area because of the large lethal range. Offensive grenades however could be used out in the open because of its small blast range. Gas grenades were sometimes used for clearing out areas in enemy trenches where an explosive grenade did not do any damage. Phosphorus grenades were also used to clear out enemy trenches and were also used to create a thick smoke to hide advancing men from the enemy.[2]
