Mastectomy for gender confirmation section (new for main article)

Note: This section will likely be slightly altered when implemented to fit the rest of the article.

People who want or need to have this procedure are not limited to those with breast cancer. Some transgender and non-binary people may desire to have this surgery to reduce or eliminate feelings of gender dysphoria. For these people, having breasts can cause poor self-esteem, anxiety, and depression. In these cases, this surgery may be medically necessary for this reason.

Before the surgery is approved, a doctor or mental health professional will determine if the patient suffers from gender dysphoria due to having breasts. They will also determine if is the best option for the patient by discussing other options if these have not been tried with no success already.

In the LGBT community, this surgery and breast augmentation are both casually referred to as a "top surgery".

Mastectomy before surgery section overhaul

Note: This section will likely be slightly altered when implemented to fit the rest of the article.

Before the operation, the patient will meet with the surgeon a few days before the surgery or the day before. The extent and specific details regarding the mastectomy will be discussed along with the person's medical history.

If the procedure is being done to remove cancerous tissue, there is some urgency in timing the surgery. The medical viewpoint stresses the statistical fact of much stronger chances for cure and survival when the breast is removed completely, even when the size of the cancer is small. However, the patient can decide whether the entire breast is to be removed, or only a part of it.

Before the surgery the patient will have time to ask any questions regarding the procedure at this time and after everything is addressed a consent form is signed.

Recent research has indicated that mammograms should not be done with any increased frequency than normal procedure in people undergoing breast surgery, including breast augmentation, mastopexy, and breast reduction.
