Surfing in North Carolina new article content ...
Surfing is the sport/art of riding a wave from the ocean. It was the Sport of Kings in pre-Cook Hawaii and no doubt the fearlessness of the indigenous people of the islands gave rise to a surfing culture that stayed throughout the "occupation." The sport became a universal curiosity at the turn of the century with the Olympic swimmer from Hawaii, Duke Kahonaka, popularized the surfing technique, not to mention the athleticism. Surfing took hold in California slowly at first with several stages of innovative design and "colorful characters" who still today have supplied a rich tradition of folklore.
