Travel Frog (Japanese: 旅かえる) is a game developed by Japanese game company Hit-Point, released for iOS and Android smartphones. The Android version was released on 24th November 2017, and the iOS version was released on 6th December 2017[1]. In gameplay, the player's only task is to prepare a frog with items it can take travelling[2].

Being especially popular in Mainland China, despite only having a Japanese language version, on the 20th January 2018 the game reached the top of the App Store rankings for free-to-play games[3].

Gameplay[edit]

InTravel Frog it is not necessary to look after the pet,and there is no definitive goal. Instead there is just a minor collection element. This is similar to another popular game released by the company Hit-Point, Neko Atsume: Kitty Collector[4].

The setting of the game is the world of a frog. The first time entering the game, the player must pick a name for this frog, although it is also possible to change the name of the frog afterwards. Gameplay is fairly simple, the player cannot control the frog's movement. All the player can do is collect clovers in a courtyard and use them as currency to buy travel accessories for the frog, and to pack its luggage with bento boxes, amulets and other items. In the garden can occasionally be found four-leaf clovers which also function as amulets. Once the frog's bags are backed, it can go travelling by itself. Its time of departure, destination or travelling time are unknown, but all affected by the travel accessories the player packed. As well as directly packing the bags for the frog, the player is also able to place the items on an indoor table for the frog to pack itself before leaving[5].

While travelling, the frog can send the player photographs. The scenes from these photographs are mostly famous spots in Japan, such as Nagoya Castle in Aichi Prefecture, the Arima Hot Springs in Hyōgo Prefecture, or the Kusatsu Hot Springs in Gunma Prefecture, or Jōmon Sugi in Yakushima[6]. On returning, the frog may bring souvenirs in the form of rare treasure(Japanese: いっぴん)or local gifts(Japanese: めいぶつ).

In the store, the player can play a lottery(Japanese: ふくびき)in exchange for five coupons. The frog's friends, snails, crabsbutterflies, bees and turtles, can visit the courtyard at any time and give the player lottery coupons. Sending a local gift to the visitors can bring extra presents in return[7]

The game itself is free-to-play, but within the game it is possible to buy clovers, to save waiting for the clovers to grow[8]

In Travel Frog the player is currently unable to synchronise data to the game login account, therefore if the user uninstalls and re-installs the came or replaces their phone, there is no way to retrieve the game data. This is similar with Atsume: Kitty Collector. The creators have said they will fix this as soon as possible[9].

Influence and reception[edit]

In the months following release, Travel Frog was very well received, particularly by gamers in the Chinese Mainland. At the end of January 2018, even though Travel Frog had no official Chinese language version, it took first place in rankings of free games on Apple's App Store, surpassing recently popular games such as Kings of Glory and Operation Wilderness[10]

Travel Frog is a game that needs little and infrequent involvement from the player, so Chinese players  have said the game adheres to the 'sui yuan' spirit in Buddhism. ”[11]
