The National Association for Practical Nurse Education and Service was founded in 1941 in Chicago as the Association of Practical Nurse Schools. In 1945, it was incorporated as an Ohio non-profit entity.

The original members were fifteen people from five states: New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, and Ohio. In 1945, it was incorporated as an Ohio non-profit entity.
