The Greenwood Apartments in Clearwater, Florida, were built in 1949 by the Greenwood Apartments, Inc., for a cost of about $1,000,000. The apartments are located on Palmetto Street, just off Greenwood Avenue. The project was planned by John C. Emerson, who, with his sons, was owner and builder.

History[edit]

The mission of the project was to build affordable housing for middle-class African American wage earners. The project consisted of 27 buildings, 200 units with 4 rooms and a bath in each unit. The buildings, two-stories in height, were constructed using concrete blocks. Stephen Ralph Fetner (1892–1979), AIA, of Jacksonville, Florida, was the architect. It was financed by the Federal Housing Authority. At the time, it was the only private housing project for African Americans in Pinallas County. The African American house project in St. Petersburg was operating by the Federal government.[1]

In 1950, the owners defaulted on more than $980,000 and, on the petition of the Federal National Mortgage Association, the project went into receivership.
