Career

While still studying design at La Cambre Arts Visuels in Brussels, Delbart’s designs first appeared in 2010 at several group exhibitions in Brussels. From 2010 to 2011, he assisted Bram Boo, a Belgian designer on several projects for galleries and brands. In 2012 he started a career at Philips Lighting to learn more about lighting, while starting his own studio. In 2014, he left Philips Lighting to focus on his own design studio. Since 2014, he has coordinated the creation of several brands and brand identities, both as a creative director and a strategy consultant. His work led to successful projects, winning several awards and helping business to grow. He aims to set up longer, sustainable partnerships with companies. Since 2015, Frederik has consulted the door handle manufacturer Quincalux under the role of creative director. From 2017 until 2020, he was appointed as Creative Director and Head of Design & Innovation of the Belgian furniture manufacturer Recor Group.

During the course of his career he has developed his own identity. From lighting and furniture to hardware, cutlery and many more, he succeeds in creating clever and refined objects. Frederik Delbart is known for exploring materials and questioning the boundaries between tradition and innovation, while blending them together. In his search for implementation of new techniques he continuously collaborates with other professionals.

Awards

In 2014 he was awarded a Henry Van de Velde Label for the commercial continuation of his graduation project "The Siblings", a light combining glass, wood and OLED-lighting technology. The Siblings went into production with LED's, under the Belgium-based brand Per/Use.

“The Siblings is an important design for me because it is the very first produced design,” says Frederik Delbart. The return was immediately visible, “The Siblings” was eagerly picked up by the national and international design press. The strength of Frederik Delbart was to continue on that impetus and to develop a portfolio entirely as an independent designer. Wanderful Design

The studio was awarded with several prestigious design prizes since its foundation in 2011. In October 2018, Frederik Delbart was awarded the title of “Designer of the Year by magazines Knack Weekend / Le Vif Weekend and the Biennale Interieur. The prize is supported by Bozar, the Design museum Ghent and the Centre d'innovation et de design in Grand-Hornu. The jury stated the following : “For the thirteenth time in a row, a Belgian designer is crowned designer of the year. Frederik Delbart, a furniture and product developer pur sang, is this year's laureate. The 30-year-old designer tries to explore all aspects of design: from the early design to strategic thinking. His designer language also shows an unlikely authenticity.”
