Lujaina Mohsin Haider Darwish is an Omani businesswoman and a politician. Along with Rahila Al Riyami, she was one of the first two women to be directly elected to the Consultative Assembly in 2000. In 2015 she was appointed to the Council of State. Darwish is also the chairperson of ITICS at Mohsin Haider Darwish LLC (MHD).[1]

Biography

Lujaina Mohsin Haider Darwish was the eldest of three daughters of the businessman Mohsin Haider Darwish.[2] She attended Sultan Qaboos University, where she earned a degree in English literature.[3] She subsequently became a lecturer at the university, before joining the family business.[3]

In 2000 she was one of fifteen female candidates in the general elections that year.[4] Running in Muscat, she was one of two women elected. She was re-elected to the Assembly in 2003,[5] but lost her seat in the 2007 elections.[6] Darwish was elected twice for Majlis A’ Shuraa, Oman's consultative council. She is one of the only seven women elected since its foundation. She has represented Oman & GCC Women on many Global & Regional Summits in Geneva, Muscat, Sweden, and Dubai. Speaker at the WTO public forum-Geneva, “Leadership beyond the veil.” She was a key note speaker for the IRU World Congress 2018, Muscat.[7]

She later became deputy chair of Mohsin Haider Darwish LLC.[3] In 2015 she was appointed to the Council of State.[3] She is also currently a member of the board of trustees at Al-Zahra College for Women.[3] Darwish also heads the Sidab football Club. She is the first woman from the Gulf and the second in the Arab to head a football club.[8]
