The albums discography of American recording artist Janet Jackson consists of ten studio albums, two compilation albums, and two remix albums. In 1982, Jackson's father, Joe Jackson arranged a contract for her with A&M Records.[1] That same year she released her debut album, Janet Jackson. It peaked at number sixty-three on the U.S. Billboard 200 and number six on the U.S. Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.[2] Two years later, Jackson released her second studio album, Dream Street. It reached number one-hundred and fourty seven on the Billboard 200 and number nineteen on the R&B albums chart.[2] Sales for both albums in the United States were moderate, selling about 250,000 copies each.[3] In 1986, Jackson released her third studio album, Control.[4] Considered her "breakthrough album", it debuted at number eighty-four on the Billboard 200 in March of 1986, and soon made it to the top of the chart, where it stayed for two consecutive weeks.[5][2] It was certified five times platinum by the RIAA and sold fourteen million copies worldwide.[6][7] In 1989, Jackson released her fourth studio album, Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814. The album debuted on the Billboard 200 at number twenty-eight, and within four weeks, it hit the top of the chart, where it stayed for four consecutive weeks.[8][2] Outside of the United States, it became her first record to hit number one in Australia.[9] It was certified six times platinum by the RIAA and sold more than fourteen million copies worldwide.[6][7]

With the release of Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814, Jackson fulfilled her contract with A&M Records. In 1991, she signed a highly publicized multi-million dollar contract with Virgin Records, estimated between $32–50 million, and became the highest paid female recording artist in contemporary music.[10] Two years after she signed with Virgin, she released her fifth studio album, janet. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, becoming her third consecutive album to top the chart, and is one of only five albums by a female artist in the chart's 53-year history to arrive at No. 1 and remain on top for at least six weeks.[11][2][12] It also hit number one in Australia, New Zealand, and The United Kingdom.[9][13][14] janet. was certified six times platinum by the RIAA, with worldwide sales exceeding twenty million copies.[6][15] In 1995, she released her first greatest hits compilation, Design of a Decade 1986/1996. It debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 and peaked at number three.[2] It received a two times platinum certification by the RIAA and sold in excess of four million copies worldwide.[6][16] In January 1996, Jackson renewed her recording contract with Virgin for a then-unparalleled $80 million dollars.[17] The four-album record deal marked the second time Jackson had broken the industry's record for an unmatched recording contract.[17] The following year, she released her sixth studio album, The Velvet Rope. The album became her second consecutive album to debut atop the Billboard 200, selling 202,000 copies in its first week of release, and became her fourth album overall to top the chart.[18][19][2] The album was certified three times platinum by the RIAA and sold over ten million copies worldwide.[6][7]

Jackson began the new millennium with the release of her seventh studio album in 2001, All for You. It was her third consecutive album to debut at number one, as well as her fifth consecutive to hit the top of the Billboard 200. The release sold 605,128 copies in its first week, thus becoming her biggest opening week sales of her career.[20][2][21][22] Shortly after it's release, it was certified two times platinum by the RIAA, and sold in excess of seven million copies worldwide.[7][23] In 2004, she released her eighth studio album, Damita Jo. It debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 selling 381,000 copies, thus breaking her five album streak of number one albums atop the Billboard 200.[24][25][2] It achieved Platinum status in the United States and managed to sell nearly two and-a-half copies worldwide.[6][26] In 2006, she released her ninth studio album, 20 Y.O., which fulfilled her contract with Virgin Records. It was her second consecutive number two debuted on the Billboard 200.[2] It became her eighth platinum certified album in the United States, and sold in excess of one million copies worldwide.[27][6][26] In 2007, Jackson signed a record deal with Island Records where she released her tenth studio album Discipline. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, becoming her sixth to do so.[28][2] Despite debuting at number one, the album never received a certification by the RIAA, thus leading to her departure form the label.[29][30] In 2009, she released her second greatest hits compilation, Number Ones, where it debuted at number twenty-two on the Billboard 200.[2] As of 2009, the RIAA lists her as the eleventh best-selling female artist in the United States, with 26 million certified albums.[31] Jackson has sold in excess of 100 million records worldwide, thus becoming one the best-selling recording artists in history.[7]
