The Holy Name of Jesus Parish in Lodz is a Roman Catholic parish situated in the central area of Lodz, within the administrative district of Katedralna. It is part of the Lodz-Śródmieście deanery in the archdiocese of Lodz. Affiliated with the Jesuit order, the church is under the pastoral care of members from this religious congregation. Additionally, they oversee the Mocni w Duchu center located at the church.

Parish[edit]

The concept of building a second evangelical church in Łódź emerged in the 1850s. At that time, the local Augsburg Evangelical parish was the largest in the Kingdom of Poland, with 12,000 members. However, the only Lutheran church in the city, St. Trinity, located near the New Market, could accommodate only 1,500 worshipers.[1]

In 1997, a renovation project was initiated, aiming to restore the church to its original appearance. The restoration efforts, led by the Renovation Council, included the removal of alterations from the early 20th century. The church was finally repurchased by the evangelicals in 1989 and regained its status as a significant academic and spiritual center.[1]

In 1945 it was illegally occupied by the Jesuits. This was allegedly as part of a quiet action by secular authorities to eradicate German traces in Lodz by the Jesuits - although Polish Protestant services were held in the church from the beginning. For years, the Evangelical Church demanded the return of the buildings.[1] For several years it functioned as a branch church for the parish of the Elevation of the Holy Cross. After the Holy Name of Jesus parish was erected in 1950, the church became its parish temple. The church buildings were purchased from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Republic of Poland only in 1989. [1]

On September 1, 2020, Archbishop Grzegorz Ryś elevated the Church of the Holy Name of Jesus to the status of a sanctuary through his decision.[2]
