Talk pages are an important part of wikipedia. There are talk pages for almost every page on wikipedia. As with articles there are a number of rules that govern the use of user-pages.
Uses
[edit]The use of talk pages depends on what type of talk page they are:
- Article
- These talk pages are used to discuss improvements of the article and not to discuss the article's subject. For example, this page, Talk: Adolf Hitler, should not be used to talk about whether Hitler was evil, gay, had one ball etc.
- User
- These talk pages are used by wikipedians to keep in touch with each other. They are used to reward, discuss about edits the users have made, to warn them about inappropriate edits, and if necessary, to inform users that they have been blocked.
- Wikipedia
- These talk pages are used for discussions about things that change wikipedia as a whole. For example, changing policy or appointing admins.
- Wikiprojects
- These talk pages are used by members of the wikiproject to talk about the wikiproject itself or articles under their influence. They are also used by non-members to ask for help or a clarification about something under the projects influence.
Rules
[edit]As with all parts of wikipedia there are rules that govern the use of talk pages:
- WP:Civil - Be nice
- WP:No personal attacks - Do not attack other users
- WP:Etiquette - Don't use CAPITALS or bold text, this is perceived as shouting and is unconstructive
- WP:Assume good faith - Assume that users are being constructive unless there is strong evidence otherwise
