Early life
[edit]Kessel was born on August 28, 1991, in Madison, Wisconsin.[1] Both of her parents were college athletes: her mother Kathy ran track and field, while her father Phil Sr. was an American football quarterback who was drafted by the Washington Redskins of the National Football League (NFL).[2]

[edit]On May 1, 2016, Kessel signed a one-year, $26,000 contract with the New York Riveters of the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL). It was the largest salary of any NWHL player at the time, $1,000 higher than the deal Kelli Stack had signed with the Connecticut Whale the season prior, and Kessel negotiated her contract without a sports agent.[3]
