[edit]Football culture in Rock Hill
[edit]Phillip Adams
[edit]Phillip Adams was born on July 20, 1988, in Rock Hill, South Carolina.[1] He played American football and basketball at Rock Hill High School, winning state championships in both sports. Adams was also involved in wrestling through his family.[2]
Shooting
[edit]Shook was taken to the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he underwent multiple surgeries for his injuries.[3]
Victims
[edit]Outside of the family, Adams also shot and killed two heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) technicians for GSM Services, a repair company serving the Charlotte metropolitan area. At the time of the shooting, they had been engaged in repair work at the Lesslie family's home. One victim, James Lewis, was a 38-year-old single father from Gastonia, North Carolina, who had begun working with the company to support his three children.[4] The other was Robert Shook, also 38 years old, who lived in Cherryville, North Carolina, with his wife and three children.[3]
Investigation
[edit]Two days after the shooting, York County Coroner Sabrina Gast announced that her office would be working with researchers at Boston University to determine if Adams suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a neurodegenerative disease associated with athletes and military personnel who experienced repeated head trauma.[5] On December 14, autopsy results concluded that Adams was suffering from second-stage CTE, associated with behavioral and cognitive symptoms such as memory loss and impulsivity, and that the damage to both frontal lobes had been "unusually severe".[6]
Aftermath
[edit]On April 11, a community memorial and prayer vigil was held at Fountain Park for the victims of the Rock Hill shooting.[7] A memorial service for the family followed on April 14 at West End Baptist Church. While attendance was private, the service was livestreamed by West End Baptist and First Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church.[8]
