Mustafa bin Yusuf (Azerbaijani: Mustafa Yusif oğlu), better known by his pen name Darir[a] (Azerbaijani: Zərir) was a 14th-century poet. He is considered one of the leading poets of Azerbaijani literature during that time and his poems played a significant role in the development of the Azerbaijani literary language.

Life[edit]

There is nothing in sources about Darir's life. Only information about him is derived from his poetry.[1] He traveled to Egypt in 1377 on the invitation of Akmal al-Din al-Babarti. Through al-Babarti, he got the opportunity to introduce himself to Barquq and gain his favour. As he himself has described, Darir, who had gained the great appreciation of his peers thanks to his strong memory, wide array of knowledge, the sweetness of his speech and his attractiveness, would narrate the lives and ghazwa (alternative words possible) of sahabas, meliks and emirs; and the conquests of Damascus, Egypt and Iraq alongside many different historical parables
