Grama Nanjappa Dhanapal

Dr. G.N. Dhanapal was born on 20-05-1959 in Shantigrama, Hassan, Karnataka, India and obtained B.Sc. (Agri.) and M.Sc. (Agri.) in Agronomy from the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore and Ph.D. from University of Wageningen, The Netherlands. He is presently the Head of Main Research Station(MRS) of Weed Technology, Hebbal, Bengaluru, Karnataka, India.

During last 27 years, served as Agricultural Officer, Associate Professor of Forestry, Junior breeder, Extension Consultant and presently as Professor of Agronomy in the Dryland Agriculture Research Station, GKVK(Gandhi Krishi Vignana Kendra), Bengaluru.

Developed a novel technique to control aquatic weed Eichhornia by Alligator weed, selective herbicides to control dry land weeds in cereals- pulses-oilseed crop’s production. Identified elite germplasms in Sesbania and Crotalaria for green manuring. Developed an Integrated Management Strategy for broomrape in tobacco. Handled 6-ad-hoc projects on biochar, green manuring, data base development and value addition to under utilized crops, micro- nutrients in drylands and climate change.

Presented scientific papers on parasitic weed management, aquatic and dry land weed management, organic farming, rainwater management and farming systems in various fora. Chaired session in International Congress of Parasitic Plants held in Charlottesville, United States of America in 2007, Kunming, China in 2015 Invited presentation on Integrated Weed Management in rice in Duzce, Turkey in December, 2015.

He as developed 4-dry land technologies as Principal Investigator and 12-Weed Technologies as Co PI.

He is presently teaching post-graduate course and guided 30 M.Sc.(Agri.) and Ph.D. students and has undergone training in potato cultivation at IAC(International Agricultural Centre), Wageningen and 92- research publications at his credit authored 7-books.

2009 Best Research/Demo Plot Award-Agricultural Fair from University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore continuously for five years from 2009-2013, for having showcased all the dry land technologies on the field and more than one lakh farmers/ dignitaries and others visited.
