Lieutenant General Arturo Bayuga Ortiz was the 53rd Commanding General of the Philippine Army and is a Medal of Valor Awardee.

Medal of Valor Awardee

He made his mark by leading several Special Forces 12-man teams in a fierce gun battle against 300 New People’s Army (NPA) fighters in Murcia, Negros Occidental on April 6, 1990. His daring raid of the NPA camp left 84 NPA rebels killed and eight others captured. The soldiers also seized a cache of weapons and ammunition that vastly reduced the NPA strength in Negros Occidental.

Other Awards Received

Among the awards given to him during his distingushed military career were four Distinguished Service Stars, three Gold Cross Medals, four Bronze Cross Medals, four Military Merit Medals for Combat, and at least 17 Military Merit Medals for excellence in administration. In 1991, he received from the Philippine Military Academy the most coveted Cavalier Award for Outstanding Performance as Military Professional in Army Operations for 1991. He also received the Alumni Achievement Award in 1996 from the PMA.

Positions Held

Aside from his stint as team leader, company commander and battalion commander with the Special Forces, he also served as the Philippine Army's Assistant Chief-of-Staff for Comptrolership. Recognized for his tactical prowess, he was later designated as Commandant of the Combat Arms School, Training and Doctrines Command, PA. After that assignment, he was picked to command the Security and Escort Battalion of the Philppine Army. To help produce good caliber officers, he was later assigned to the Philippine Military Academy and designated as the Commandant of Cadets. He later on became the Chief of the Command Center, AFP where he was in charge of monitoring all operations conducted by the AFP. In 2006, he was designated as the Regiment Commander of the Special Forces Regiment and, later, Commander of the Special Operations Command, Philippine Army.
