MeBeam is a website which pairs random strangers for webcam-based conversations. Visitors to the website randomly begin an online stranger chat (video and text) with another visitor. At any point, either user may leave the current chat and initiate another random connection.

MeBeam Video Chat is a quick and easy way for you and up to 18 of your friends to start a video chat. Mebeam, does not require any registration, login or downloading of software. To start a video conference, select a name for your video room and click connect - all other participants, need to enter the same video room name to join.

Overview[edit]

The site was launched in November 2007 by Ashod Apakian, as a web-based demo of a research application he was working on, with the goal to create the worlds fastest video phone,[1] and gained popularity after a plugin was developed to provide multi-party video conferencing for Adium in August 2008 after being featured on Digg,[2], and has since been the most downloaded plugin for Adium[3]

The site was also featured on Chris Pirillo at which point, it gained wide spread usage.[4]

The website uses Adobe Systems Flash Player to display video and access the user's webcam. It works across, Windows, Linux and Macintosh, along with any web browser that support Flash 8.
