Single

"Alive" is the debut American single by Greek American singer Annet Artani. Self-penned by Artani in 2007 as a possible entry to represent Greece in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008, it was released on March 31, 2009 by Ultra Records. The song was intended to be the first single from an upcoming album set for release in Spring 2009.

Background and composition[edit]

"Alive" was released as Artani's followup single to her 2006 Eurovision Song Contest entry "Why Angels Cry". The song was written in December 2007 while she was on what she described as a "Eurovision song writing trip" in Canada.[1][2] It was originally written as one of Artani's three submissions to Hellenic Radio and Television (ERT) to be considered as one of the possible songs to represent Greece in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008.[3] However, she never submitted the songs after talking it over with the network and realizing the implications. She had already left her Greek record label Virus Music and had signed to a label in the United States. In order to submit the songs for consideration, she would have had to be signed to a Greek label once again, which would have meant unsigning in the United States. Artani felt that it would be better to be obligated to her US label instead as it could do more for her career.[3]

Artani penned the song herself and it was described as a "motivational “girl power” pop rock dance tune about a woman who rises above a difficult break up",[4] Artani explained that she wanted to "write and perform songs that are personal and emotional, something that people can actually relate to. [She] wrote this song when [she] was coming out of a bad relationship and [hopes] its positive message will inspire others who hear to it."[4] She added that the song "is about power, self worth and survival after separation and [she hopes she] can inspire the way [she's] feeling...on others. Cause life doesn't suck. Only temporarily!"[5]

Release[edit]

The song was first played on the radio station Party 105.3 of the New York City area on November 11, 2008.[6] It was originally scheduled for a February 2009 release,[4] but it was pushed back to late March in order to coincide with the release of a music video. It was released as a digital download on March 31, 2009 and was intended to be the first single from her upcoming studio album which had been set for release in Spring 2009.[4][7]

Music video and promotion[edit]

A music video for the song was shot in Miami in late March.[8] Styling for the video was managed by Artani's friend Indashio, winner of VH1's Glam Gods award.[5] She dedicated the video to those who suffered from abusive relationships as did she and cited fellow singer Rihanna's publicized ordeal as the impetus for including abusive elements in the video's plot.[9]

Prior to its release, Artani performed the song at many venues near her home in New York City. The first live performance was at the China Club and it took place on October 25, 2008.[10] Two months later, she performed the song at her management company's holiday party at Duvet in New York City on December 19, 2008.[11][12]

As part of a promotional campaign, the music video for "Alive" was played in the store Footlocker, while the song was added to playlists at gyms and retail establishments.[9]
