Iqbal "Torrance" Mohammed (4 October 1931 – 25 May 2021) was a Trinidad and Tobago dancer and choreographer, who served as Deputy Mayor of San Fernando.[1]

Early life and education[edit]

Mohammed was born in Iere Village in Princes Town, the fourth of 2 children. His father was a Muslim imam. His great-grandparents immigrated from British India as indentured labourers. Between the ages of four and eight he lived with his grandparents - a Muslim butcher and a Hindu homemaker - in Princes Town, before moving back to Iere Village at the age of eight.[2]

He attended Princes Town Roman Catholic Primary School until he was eight, when he transferred to Iere Village Government School. He then attended San Fernando Technical Institute (SFTI).[2]

Career[edit]

While enrolled at SFTI, Mohammed began work in oilfields where he apprenticed as a technician. He later switched jobs to insurance salesman.[2]
