Readings. Most teachers assign outside readings to supplement and illustrate the textbook they have chosen . Readings provide the students with sources of sociological understanding and insight in addition to that of the textbook author, and help to make the subject matter of each chapter to succeed more meaningful by looking at several selected areas in greater depth.
Since sociology depends heavily on statistical data , it is important for the new student to become familiar with the ways such data commonly are presented as they are important .
