Edward Effros

Edward Effros (December 10, 1935 - December 21, 2019)^[1] was an American mathematician known for his contributions to the fields of operator algebras and representation theory.

Work[edit]

Effros had 16 PhD-students, many of which became renowned mathematicians: Robert Busby, Maurice Dupre, William Green, Patricia Kenschaft, Dong Chi, Chao-Liang Shen, Yiu-Tung Poon, Zhong-Jin Ruan, Marius Dadarlat, Kevin McClanahan, Soren Winkler, Eduard Vaysleb, Corran Webster, Ping Ng, Dmitri Nikshych, Vrej Zarikian.^[1]

Biography[edit]

Effros was born 1935 in Queens and grew up in Great Neck, NY, together with his identical twin brother Dick Effros. He obtained an undergraduate degree in mathematics from MIT and then a PhD degree from Harvard in 1962 for his thesis On the Representations of C*-Algebras under the supervision of George Mackey. ^[1]
